Biographical Sketch
James M. Stocks, MD.
Dr. Stocks received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas in 1979. From 1979 through 1985 he pursued his postgraduate training in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Disease, and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, PA.
He has been a faculty member at the University of Texas Health Center at Tyler since 1985 and currently has an appointment as a Professor of Medicine.
Dr. Stocks is the Director of the Clinical Research Center in Tyler, as well as the Medical Director of the Pulmonary Function and Sleep Laboratories.
For the past 15 years as a faculty member of the University of Texas Health Center at Tyler, Dr. Stocks has had as his major research focus clinical research in Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (AAT). He was a principal investigator in the NHLBI registry of patients with severe Alpha-1 deficiency from 1988 - 1995 with successful recruitment of patients from across states of Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. Over the last decade he has participated as a principal investigator in almost every pharmaceutical trial for Alpha-1 conducted in the United States, and these efforts have encompassed Phase I through pivotal trials.
At the Health Center in Tyler Dr. Stocks has been involved in outreach educational activities for AAT throughout the region. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Alpha-1 Association, a non-profit organization serving the Alpha-1 patient community. He is a member of the Alpha-1 Foundation's Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee with responsibilities for oversight of the Foundation's Research Registry. Dr. Stocks has been involved in the Alpha-1 Foundation's Research Registry since its inception.
