Biography
Charlie Strange, MD
Charlie Strange, MD, is Professor of Pulmonary Medicine, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Dr. Strange received his undergraduate degree at Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina, and his medical degree at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. He completed his Internal Medicine internship and residency at the Medical University of South Carolina, and performed his fellowship in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University. Dr. Strange is board certified in Internal Medicine with subspecialties in Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care Medicine.
Dr. Strange's research interests include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease from alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD), pulmonary hypertension in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and scleroderma lung disease. He is the immediate past Chair for the American College of Chest Physicians Interstitial Lung Disease Network, as well as Chair of the Program Committee, Clinical Problems Assembly, for the American Thoracic Society. He is a member of the American Thoracic Society and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
Dr. Strange is the author or co-author of numerous publications, presentations, and book and computer chapters. He has been published in esteemed medical journals, including Chest, American Journal of Respiratory Critical Care Medicine, Journal of American Medical Association, and Annals of Internal Medicine.
He is the Director of the Alpha-1 Foundation Research Registry at MUSC that is the largest registry of AATD in the world. The Registry currently contains more than 3000 individuals with severe AATD or the carrier state. Dr. Strange's research in AATD focuses on genetic testing, smoking cessation, and augmentation therapy.
