Episodic AtaxiasThe episodic ataxias are characterized by attacks of clumsiness and imbalance triggered by factors such as stress or fatigue. Episodic ataxia type 1 is characterized by episodes of imbalance with fine twitching or rippling of muscles, which is difficult to see except in small muscles of the hand and face but is detectable by electro-myography.
